In the National Socialist era, the anti-Semitic party NSDAP established a cultural center with a gallery and public library in honor of their Führer in the house where he was born. It later housed a library, then a school, and finally, for more than 30 years, a workshop for handicapped people. The house closed in 2011 for lack of renovation work and has stood empty since.

In January 1935, Hitler hired the Atelier Troost to renovate and redecorate his spacious Munich apartment at the extravagant cost of 120,000 Reichsmarks – more than 10 times the average income earned by a doctor in Germany that year. When the Obersalzberg was secured for Hitler's headquarters, a gatehouse was built just down the road from the residence. Those eight years actually made Hastert the longest-serving Republican speaker in history. It was damaged by British bombs in late April 1945, and again in early May by retreating SS troops, and it was looted after Allied troops reached the area. The Berghof was Adolf Hitler's holiday home in the Obersalzberg of the Bavarian Alps near Berchtesgaden, Bavaria, Germany. It caused some local and international fluttering in the media 10 years later, when the origin of the building materials was "discovered" (see Spiegel article). There were some fear it could become a shrine for Nazi sympathizers; it hasn't been in the news since then, as far as I know. The pretty village of Berchtesgaden lies just ten minutes down the hill from the ruins of Hitler's home. Next door to the ruins of the Berghof is the Hotel zum Türken, Hitler's neighbor during the Third Reich period, and still receiving guests. Hitler’s sister Paula, who died in 1960 at the age of 64, is buried in Berchtesgaden’s cemetery but little else remains of that dark chapter in history. The Berghof was damaged in a British air raid on 25 April 1945 and burned down by the Obersalzberg SS a few days later. The postwar US military government ordered the ruins to be blown up in 1952 to avoid it becoming a shrine, with fast-growing trees planted over them.
